EACJ to Hear Arguments on Jurisdiction Objection in Case Challenging East African Crude Oil Pipeline Construction
Tomorrow, April 5th, the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) will hear arguments for and against the objection to the court’s jurisdiction filed by Tanzania, Uganda, and the Secretary General of the East African Community, in response to a case challenging the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).
The case was filed by Natural Justice, Centre for Strategic Litigation, CEFROHT, and AFIEGO, challenging the EACOP on environmental, social justice, and climate justice concerns. The case argues that the project violates various provisions, including human rights and climate impact assessments, and effective public participation and consultation. If the court determines it has jurisdiction, the matter will proceed and be heard on its merits.
The case is seen as important for the communities affected by EACOP, and a favorable ruling could send a message to investors that relentless extraction at the expense of human rights and sustainability will not go unchallenged. Read the full statement here.
